Prominent Iranian figures discuss the future of democracy

Eight prominent Iranian opposition figures have announced they will meet this week at Georgetown University in Washington to discuss the future of democracy in Iran, and the revolution for women's rights.

This meeting comes in the middle of a wave of citizen protests, prompted by the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, Kurdish-Iranian, who was in police custody, on the grounds that she did not put the veil on her head properly.

Since Amin's death, daily protests have taken place across Iran, resulting in the arrest of many people, including filmmakers, public figures, journalists and activists.

At least 522 people have been killed during four months of protests against Iran's government, according to reports by the US-based HRANA.

Among the dead are 70 children and 68 police officers, the organization said on Sunday.

Nearly 20,000 people have been arrested, of which 110 have charges that could result in death sentences./ REL
