At least 10 people were killed and 30 others were injured when a truck plowed into a crowd on Bourbon Street in New Orleans on Wednesday, authorities said.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has said in a statement that the suspect in the attack is dead and that the attack is being investigated as an "act of terrorism".

In the statement, it was announced that the suspect was involved in an armed fight with the police and that as a result he is dead.

The attack took place in an area very popular with tourists.

Chief Inspector Anne Kirkpatrick said the incident started around 3:00 a.m. local time and that the driver drove the truck on Bourbon Street at high speed.

Kirkpatrick said the man displayed "intentional behavior" and tried to hit as many people as possible.

She warned that the number of victims could change.
