Joe Biden gave a short speech from the White House on Thursday afternoon, the first after the defeat of the Democrats and the victory of Donald Trump.

Biden pledged a "peaceful and orderly transition" as he urged Americans to put aside debate.

The outgoing president announced that he had congratulated Trump on his victory in the elections that were held on Tuesday.

"I spoke with President-elect Trump to congratulate him on his victory and assured him that I will direct my entire administration to work with his team to ensure a peaceful and orderly transition. This is what the American people deserve," declared Biden.
