Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a new law on Thursday, according to which any foreign organization, including those founded by state bodies of third countries, can be declared "undesirable".
The law does not apply to international intergovernmental organizations of which Russia is a part, nor to organizations incorporated in governmental structures of foreign countries.
In June, the European Court of Human Rights found that Russia violated the European Convention on Human Rights when it declared "undesirable" some foreign organizations operating in Russia, including Radio Free Europe (REL).
According to the register, REL is the 142nd entity to be included in the list.
Inclusion in the list means that an organization cannot operate in Russia, and citizens of Russia are prohibited from cooperating with it, because otherwise they risk criminal prosecution./ REL
