General Wesley Clark, in his testimony in The Hague, was asked about tensions between Serbs and Albanians in July 1999 in the city of Mitrovica.
He said that "I never thought that the KLA" organized riots, but he claimed that there was pressure to remove Albanians from the northern part of the Ibar River.
"I don't think it was organized. I never had the impression that this was organized by the KLA. These were individual groups," Clark said.
He recalled that he had complained to the then NATO secretary general and the French defense and foreign ministers, as French KFOR troops were stationed there, due to, as he put it, the Serbs' attempt to clear the northern part of the Ibar of Albanians.
"I met with [French Defense Minister Alain] Richard who told me no, we have ordered French troops to protect the Serbs in that area and support them. We had difficulties with that. But that's how NATO troops work. Later I sent reinforcements there so that the Albanians could live there," Clark said./REL
