Turkey's Grand National Assembly approves two-year extension of Turkish

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey today approved President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's decree extending the presence of Turkish troops in Libya by 24 months, starting from January 2, 2026.

The government said the military mission is based on an agreement with the internationally recognized government in Tripoli and is linked to Turkish interests in the Eastern Mediterranean.

For the ruling AKP party, Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman and Ankara MP Fuat Oktay said that Turkey has always stood by the Libyans. He also highlighted the historical ties between Turkey and Libya dating back to the 16th century.

On behalf of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), party deputy leader and former diplomat Namik Tan announced that his party would support the proposal conditionally, noting that the support is about the safety of soldiers and the goal of peace, but does not imply consent to an "adventurous" foreign policy.

Opposition parties criticized the lack of transparency in Libyan politics, but some voted in favor, citing support for the armed forces. The proposal was approved by a roll call vote in the plenary session, extending the presence of Turkish armed forces in Libya until early 2028. /CNA
