Plans for a second Trump-Putin meeting canceled

President Donald Trump's plans for a quick meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin could be on hold after sources familiar with the matter told CNN that a much-anticipated preliminary meeting between the world leaders' top foreign policy aides scheduled for this week has been canceled, at least for now.

Trump said Thursday after a phone call with Putin that the two "agreed that there will be a meeting of our Senior Advisors next week."

"The initial United States meetings will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, along with various other individuals, to be designated," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

However, the expected meeting between Rubio and his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov has been suspended for the time being, a White House official told CNN.

There are no clear details on why the meeting will no longer take place this week, but one of the sources said Rubio and Lavrov had different expectations regarding a possible end to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Rubio and Lavrov on Monday had a phone call and discussed "next steps," following the phone call between their two presidents last week, regarding a possible end to the conflict in Ukraine, according to a U.S. State Department statement on the call.

Rubio stressed the importance of the upcoming engagements as an opportunity for Moscow and Washington to collaborate in advancing a lasting resolution to the Russia-Ukraine war, consistent with President Trump's vision, according to the announcement./ CNA, translated by CNN
