Tragic accident with 288 victims/ Modi vows severe punishments

People found guilty of a deadly train accident in eastern India will be "severely punished", Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said.

At least 288 people were killed and more than 800 injured in Friday's incident in the Odisha region.

Two passenger trains and one freight train were involved in the incident.

Search and rescue teams have completed their work, while officials have said that all trapped and injured passengers have been found.

Modi visited the place where the accident happened, and described the whole event as "serious".

He has also met with some injured people in the hospital, and has promised that his Government will leave "no stone unturned to find treatment" for them.

It is still not clear what caused this incident, which has been described as the worst accident of this century in India.

About 2,000 passengers are believed to have been on the two crashed trains.

India has also recorded a serious train incident in 1981, when an overloaded passenger train derailed and plunged into a river - during a cyclone in the Bihar region - killing at least 800 people./Rel
