While in 2022 and 2023 a significant part of Albanians increasingly chose to leave the country, marking the highest levels of immigration after the pandemic, in the first months of this year, the trend has slowed down.
The data published by Eurostat show that in the first three months of this year, there were a total of 2,050 applications for asylum from Albanian citizens in one of the countries of the European Union.
Compared to the same period a year ago, applications have fallen by 24%, marking the lowest level since the pandemic, while they are less than half of the same period in 2019.
France continues to remain the main destination where Albanian citizens go to seek asylum due to the social facilities it offers, although the rates are dropping significantly.
In the first quarter, there were a total of 655 applications to this country, or 32% of the total. But compared to the same period a year ago, applications in France have fallen by 38%.
Germany remains second, with 485 applications (24% of the total). A 22% decrease in the flow of asylum seekers was also recorded towards Germany.
More stable are the demands towards Italy, which were reduced by only 5%. In Italy there were a total of 445 applications, or 22% of the total.

According to Eurostat, In March 2024, 73,445 non-EU citizens applied for asylum for the first time for international protection in EU countries, a decrease of 12 percent compared to March of the year past (83,915).
There were also 7,050 repeat applications, representing a 6 percent decrease compared to March 2023.
Syrians remained the largest group of people seeking asylum (10,470 first-time applicants). Followed by Afghans (5 735) and Venezuelans (5 440).
Germany (16,430), Italy (15,115), Spain (13,255) and France (10,540) continued to receive the highest number of first-time asylum applications, accounting for 75% of all first-time applications. first in the European Union.
In March 2024, the EU total of first-time asylum applications was 16.4 per 100,000 people.
Compared to the population of each EU country (on 1 January 2023), the highest rates of first-time applications were recorded in Cyprus (124.0) and Greece (36.0).
In March 2024, 2,340 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum for the first time in the EU, with the majority coming from Syria (785) and Afghanistan (325).
