He died in police custody and was reported as a suicide, family members raise

About a month ago in Suhareka, Kosovo, 48-year-old Nazif Kololli was found dead inside the police station, just a few hours after being arrested. The complaint was brought to the "Stop" show by his brother-in-law, Bajram Perteshi, who is demanding a full investigation into the incident.

Nazif was reported by his 22-year-old daughter, who has mental health problems. At around 8:30 pm, by order of the prosecutor on duty, it was decided that he be held in custody for 48 hours.

But tragically, just a few hours later, in the early hours of the morning, he was found dead inside the station. According to the victim's family and lawyer, the circumstances of his death are suspicious.

"This case happened almost 2 months ago. He had a disagreement with his daughter, the police came and took him away and after they took him away they told him that he was under arrest by the prosecution for 48 hours. At 03:40 he had passed away and at 04:00 they had notified the emergency services. The deceased's brother called me. But the police responded to us in an arrogant manner and told us that we have no responsibility whatsoever."

They state that the competent authorities have not made available to them the footage from the security cameras inside the police station, even though it has been confirmed that the cameras are working.

"Nothing convinces us without seeing the cameras. The police station has cameras. I don't suspect anything without seeing the cameras, but we haven't had any invitations from the prosecution or the court to give a statement."

The police have stated that Nazifi committed suicide by hanging himself, but his family members reject this version, saying that his body had no marks on its neck.

"We went to the forensic medicine and they told us that he had hanged himself, they even let us look at the corpse, we looked at the throat and there was no sign. I'm very sure. We also can't understand how he could hang himself, where he is many times safer in the police station than in other prisons."

The tragedy is even more serious since Nazif lost his wife in 2020. With his death, four minor children have been left without parents and are currently being raised by their grandparents and uncle.

The "Stop" journalist asked the Suhareka Police whether the detention centers are monitored by cameras, and the police officer himself confirmed this.

Journalist: I just wanted to ask, are there security cameras inside the police station?

Suhareka Police: Yes, yes there is, it is monitored..., in the detention center it is monitored with cameras.

Journalist: I'm interested in that case, that someone here, Nasif, died a month ago?

Suhareka Police: He drowned himself..., listen, the camera is inside the room.

Journalist: Are there cameras in the room? Have you taken them to the Prizren Prosecutor's Office?

Suhareka Police: Yes, no, yes, it is monitored here from Pristina as well. She is clearly visible there on the camera, when she took the thin sheet, it is that window with barbed wire and she hung it there, she sat down like that and drowned herself…/tvklan.al
