The mayor of Maliqi, Gëzim Topçiu

The mayor of Maliqi, Gëzim Topçiu, spoke to CNA about the fire situation in the village of Bode. The mayor said that 50-100 hectares of forest and bushes may have burned. Topçiu emphasized that work is being done, although the situation is worrying due to the favoring of the flames by the wind.

"We cannot give an exact surface. It can be 50,60 to 100 ha of forest, bushes, damaged area. Let's hope that it will be minimized as much as possible and with the intervention of the many forces that are from all over the region of Korça, it is the army, the police and the Fire Service, that I want to thank. 

Although the flames are very large, we cannot intervene, only limit them to specific areas. We are waiting for the intensity of the wind that spreads it to different areas to decrease. We are all here hoping they will isolate him, although in any case we may need intervention from the air", he said.

Asked if the fire was intentional or accidental, Topçiu answered:

"I can't say if it was intentional arson, it could be accidental. Residents and those who are in this area claim that 4-5 days ago when it rained, there may have been a lightning spark which may have caused the fire that may have started in the trunks of old pines and not due importance is given. 4-5 days ago, our firefighting forces intervened, they eliminated it and kept it under control, today is a regrettable day which has put us in front of the fact that we are in a very difficult situation."

Prefect Nertil Jole has stated that there has been an increased intensity of the fire and they are trying their best by using all capacities.

"We have a situation of a fire which has been present for a few days here in the Bode forest area. We arrived today at noon since there was an increased intensity of the fire and we are making maximum efforts using all our capacities at the district level, not only the services of Maliq municipality but also Korçë, Devoll, Pogradec, Pustec.  

We also engaged the forces of the Army Detachment, there are about 30 forces. I was in constant communication with the General Director Mr. Haki ?ako, to whom I have informed that the need for air service will probably have to be considered, but since the situation in the north is very aggravated at the moment, it will probably be assessed in the future what this space will be and hoping that maybe today we will make it possible to isolate the perimeter of the spread of the fire with the hope that tomorrow it will stabilize and we will have a more controlled and stabilized situation. The risk of spreading until yesterday was small today because of the wind that takes it in different directions, it increased", said the prefect./ CNA
