Air pollution in some cities even for the year 2023 appeared problematic with some indicators that were above the norm.
The report of the National Environment Agency recently published shows that in certain periods in certain areas different harmful indicators appear in excess of the allowed parameters.
First, the condition of dust particles (PM10 and PM 2.5) is analyzed. According to KMA, based on the monitoring results, we have exceeded the annual PM10 norm (40 µg/m3), at the Tirana Higjena station and at the Elbasan station.
"At the Tirana Higjena station we have an exceedance of the annual PM10 rate of 35.4%, while at the Elbasan station we have an exceedance of the annual rate of 19.62%. Referring to the annual data at the station of Korça, Tirana AKM and Tirana MTM, the values ??of PM10 are close to the annual norm, while referring to the monthly data we exceed the annual norm of PM10 at the station of Korça only in the months of January, February and December 2023.
This shows that we have an increase in PM10 dust particles only in the cold period of the year, as a result of the use of fossil materials or wood for heating homes. The average value of PM10 for the three months of January, February and December 2023 is 59.51 µg/m³ and we exceed the annual norm of PM10 (40 µg/m³) by 48.8% only during the winter," the report states.
The same assesses that referring to the daily data of PM10, compared to the daily norm (50 µg/m³), we have exceeded the daily norm of PM10 in the stations of Durrës, Elbasan, Korça, Tirana ASHR, Tirana AKM and Tirana MTM in the period of January - March, July and December.
As for the PM2.5 indicator referring to the monthly data, we have exceeded the annual norm of PM2.5 at the Korça station in the months of January, February and December 2023.
"As in the case of PM10, we have an increase in PM2.5 particles only in the cold period of the year, as a result of the use of fossil materials or wood for heating in this city. The average value of PM2.5 for the three months of January, February and December 2023 is 44.47µg/m³ expressed in %, we have exceeded the annual PM2.5 norm of 77.9%" underlines KTA.
Focusing on the nitrogen dioxide indicator, the report estimates that we exceed the annual NO2 norm at the Tirana ASHR station in the months of January, August, September, October, November. In the other months of the year, the average monthly values ??of NO2 are very close to the norm but do not exceed it. This increase comes as a result of the circulation of vehicles, often with heavy traffic. Nitrogen dioxide, on the other hand, according to measurements, does not result in excess at any of the stations.
Monitoring of SO2 for the year 2023 was carried out at the stations of Tirana Sauk, Tirana ASHR, Durres, Fier, Shkodra, Korça and Elbasan. Based on the monitored data, it appears that in no station have we exceeded the daily limit value nor the hourly limit value for SO2.
As for carbon monoxide, the measurement was carried out at the stations of Durrës, Elbasan, Fier, Korça, Shkodra, Tirana ASHR and Tirana Sauk. Based on the annual average values, the highest CO levels were monitored at the Elbasan substation./Monitor
