INSTEAD OF THE PROLOGUE

The 90s still slowly, slowly convey the cry of the removal of the fear of God's prohibition, of wild persecutions, of remembrance and prayers for him. The first words of freedom have already begun to shine and be conveyed as the hope of a fragile spring. Albania still walks, in the meadow of the shadow of death: ... the chains of death , as it is said in the Bible, had surrounded us, the anxieties of Sheol had seized us .... Again, the Albanians, even though they had denied God by violence, the wild, terrible dictatorship, of the black state security police, God continued to keep his promise for them: "And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the world" (Matthew 28:20). Albanians were chanting the hymnologies of Resurrection Sunday, experiencing the life-giving hymns and composing the symphony of the most deifying psalm of life: “Today salvation has come to the world, let us sing to the Lord, to him who rose from the grave” (Book of Holy Services).

The bells of freedom began to call all Albanians to the holy altar. Their symphony sounded hopeful. Finally, in Albania, everyone was turning to God. Everywhere the walls of the houses of God began to rise with an invitation to the people: “Praise the name of the Lord; praise him, you servants of the Lord, who stand in the house of the Lord, in the courts of the house of our God” (Psalm 135:1-2).

God blessed Albania with his promise. Shepherds for all the flocks of faiths, as tradition says, began to gather their flocks. On July 17, 1991, Archbishop Anastasios finally arrived in Albania as a light and chosen vessel of God, who, as is the meaning of the word of his name: Anastasios – resurrection, as the Resurrection of the Albanian Orthodox Church. Embracing the cross, his prayer called out the psalm “O Lord, O Lord, lift up your eyes from heaven, and see, and visit, and arrange, this vineyard which your right hand has planted”. The walls of the houses of God needed to be built, but as another sacred thing, shepherds of the flock were also needed. The Lord said: “Who will go for me”? (Isaiah 6:8a).

… The answer came. Even immediately: “Here I am, O Lord, send me” ( Isaiah 6:8b), from a son of this long-suffering land, thirsty for Christ, who for about 20 years read and prayed in secret “in the underground church”, even though the atheist darkness was fierce and extremely cruel.

Young Joan Pelushi, born in Tirana in 1956, was baptized amidst the wild, inhuman, atheistic, red terror, secretly, in 1975 by the patriotic priest, patriot, hero, later bishop of Apollonia, Mr. Kozma Qirio, becoming part of a small group of "underground church" , where the savagery of atheism could not penetrate. The love to serve man as a precious creature, an icon of God, in the years '79-'90 leads young Joan to work in the Psychiatric Hospital of Tirana, in the occupational therapy rehabilitation ward, where he displays his human values ??as a believer.

The Crucifixion-Resurrectionary Call of God would lead him to the USA in 1990, to study Theology at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Boston, where he graduated with "High Distinction" in Master of Theological Studies, in 1993.

Year 1992. The deep thirst for boundless love for God, as his worthy and zealous son, will make young John, contact the Head of the Albanian Orthodox Church, the newly arrived Archbishop Anastas, to fulfill God's call for him, to serve him in Albania, in his country, at a time when everyone wanted, were leaving the country for a better life from the extreme poverty, the devastating, tempting misery that had plagued Albania. This desire, this decision was received with God's grace and paternal pathos by Archbishop Anastas, who encouraged and congratulated him for his altruistic decision, which comes only from God. After returning to Albania, in September of that year, he begins working as a lecturer at the Theological Academy of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania. On February 27, 1994, he was ordained deacon and on December 4, priest, continuing to teach at the Theological Academy.

Although the Lord's Day was already experienced in the hearts of the faithful, the Church still did not have shepherds, bishops to lead the flock, to teach it the truths of God. This urgent need and call to serve the flock will make Father John in 1995 go back to pursue further studies at the Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology University in Boston, USA, for his further preparation and elevation as a future shepherd, so that he would be as worthy as possible in his devotion to God and the flock.

Deep spiritual depth, divine pathos, rare intelligence, boundless love for knowledge placed Father Joanin on the National Dean's List, where the names of the best students of all the Universities of the United States of America are marked, for high results in the academic year '95-'96. Holy devotion to God, constant veneration for him, prayer and study, found Father Joanin in 1996 in the rank of archimandrite.

Erudition with unwavering, diligent dedication crowns Father Joanin "High Distinction", Master of Theology, equivalent to Candidate of Science at Holy Cross, Boston, in 1997.

With a great desire to serve as much as possible the transmission of knowledge, the preparation of shepherds for the Church, after returning to Albania, he was appointed dean of the Theological Academy of the Orthodox Church, a position he held from 1996-'98.

“THE LOVE FOR CHRIST IS DEEPER THAN FOR LIFE” –

"Here I am, send me!"

By Ferdinand Samardzi: Joan Pelushi from communism to Christ, to the head of the

… I remember that it was the third year of high school, when I came into contact with the Gospel and with a group of believers who had kept the faith alive (years '74 -'75), such as Petro Zheji, Theofan Papa, Papa Kozmai, and the Cico sisters. We talked constantly with fervent zeal and great love for the Gospel. … outside there was darkness, but deep in my soul I felt a great joy, describes Bishop Joan.

A great vision of God was taking possession of young John, and the Lord was calling him, 'Come, come, enter my tent; come, come and serve the flock and live with them. The Church, the flock, had a great need for a shepherd. The people were thirsty for the Lord. Within his soul the Lord's evangelical plea rang out deeply: "The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth laborers into his harvest" (Luke 10:2).

This was the strong bell of the courageous spirit that called and put John on the path of the apostles, on the path of the shepherds, the hierarchs of the Church for the thirsty flock of God that still wandered without a shepherd, so that he "would give wings to the soul, take people and give them to God" (St. Gregory the Theologian).

John, baptized during the communist regime, taking the name of Christ's beloved apostle, Saint John the Theologian, would now also be the "beloved son" of Archbishop Anastasios and the "first-born Albanian bishop after communism" ordained by him.

... You, my beloved son, left the country during the years of persecution, even though you had received a diploma from the University of Tirana, ignoring the risks that a major event had at that time, describes Archbishop Anastasios on the day of the ordination of Bishop Joan to the Metropolitanate of Korça, 1998.

… You left the country, except to better prepare yourself theologically for your pastoral mission in the Church. You returned. You were ordained and with selflessness you have been participating in the arduous apostolic journey of the Church of Albania in recent years.

By Ferdinand Samardzi: Joan Pelushi from communism to Christ, to the head of the

Come, dear John, enter now into the joy of your Lord. That by the power of the All-Holy Spirit, with the blessings and wishes of His Holiness, the Ecumenical Patriarch, Mr. Bartholomew I, of our chosen and dear brothers, His Grace the Metropolitan of Perga, Mr. Evangelos, and His Grace the Metropolitan of Philadelphia, Mr. Meliton, who throughout this period stood by us with affection, wisdom and love, come with the prayers of the priests and the chosen people of Albania into the Holy Hieror, to receive the Grace of the All-Holy Spirit for your new path, which is not resting on a throne, but is a whole-souled acceptance of the Cross, a path according to the will of God until the end.

… Strive, dear John, to live out your episcopal calling and mission in this way, serving the Church, which the Lord “purchased with his own blood” (Acts 20:7).

On this path, in this dedication, the Metropolitan of Korça, Bishop Joan, seeks and increases his devotion, responsibility, and most worthy service to Jesus Christ. Master of many languages, English, French, Italian, Greek, and with knowledge of Latin and Hebrew, he contributes tirelessly with translations and publications to the formation, unification, and definition of philosophical-religious terminology, thus filling significant gaps in Albanian literature in this field.

DEVOTION AND DEDICATION TO KNOWLEDGE…

Teacher of God's truth, Bishop John, aims that all knowledge should be transmitted, to be acquired by everyone. "The person who loves God values ??the knowledge of God more than anything created by God and pursues this knowledge with fervor and without ceasing" (St. Maximus the Confessor).

Monsignor Joani, has been writing and publishing since 1994, in the "Ngjallja" Newspaper, Knowledge about our Orthodox faith: The Mysteries - visible signs of Divine Grace, the Service of Baptism, Anointing, Divine Communion, Marriage, Repentance, the Mystery of the Priesthood.

Evaluating the apostolic history of Albanian Christianity, which exalts our nation, as one of the first nations to embrace Christianity, Bishop Joani writes and publishes in the "Ngjallja" newspaper for years, the column: Illyrian-Albanian Saints , which describes the lives of many saints, in service to the Church, Christ and his people, and as a precious asset of our Albanian nation.

The first text of the Dogmatics of the Orthodox Church in Albanian, written by Bishop Joani, from 1995, holds important theological values ??for the Church and its time.

Spreading knowledge to the flock, the reader, equipping them with basic, understandable information about the faith and life of the Orthodox Church has been a long-standing intellectual, spiritual goal of Bishop Joan for the translation and publication of 4 volumes of "Orthodox Faith" by Protopresbyter Thomas Hopko, since 1997 - 2002. Orthodox Faith: Doctrine, Worship, Church History, Spirituality

The great value of the translations is the translation into Albanian of several profound theological books of the Holy Fathers of the Church, “ On the Holy Spirit ”, by Saint Basil the Great, in 1996, a basic book for the development of Christian doctrine.

The book of Saint Silouan the Athonite , published in 2003, enriches the Albanian language publications on the teachings of the Orthodox faith and spirit. The dispensations with sermons of the church year reveal the immeasurable treasure of Orthodoxy: the way of living the faith.

Time, its comprehensive technological, cybernetic, scientific developments, and recently artificial intelligence, have made and require that the sacred doctrine of faith survive today's conditions of man's departure from God, his path. This is also the most challenging confrontation of religion with the developed postmodern world, that faith must dominate, to prevail new values ??for the most demanding time for its developments. Based on the complete certainty promised by Christ " I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, He who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty" (Revelation 1:8).

Founder of the most important periodical magazine "Tempulli" in 2000. Its chairman, main contributor, "continuing the footsteps of spiritual shepherds, visionaries, a beautiful, natural combination of man of thought and action" , his scientific work has been labeled and appreciated by intellectuals and personalities from the world of science and culture. Magazine with universal study, philosophical, historical, cultural, research, theological, archaeological, art criticism values. Personalities from various fields, researchers, and the most renowned Albanologists from Albania and the world, convey the great message, the role of today's human society in its further developments and emancipation, religion as an instrument of peace and security in the region, the great role that faith plays in the interreligious dialogue of the time, so necessary for religious harmony and tolerance, proclaiming Christ as " the light of the world" , and inviting all to "walk as children of light" (Ephesians 5:8).

PERSONALITY, VISIONARY FOR TIME AND REALITY

Great paradox of history! The boy who believed, accepted, and secretly embraced Christ in the gloomy, dark, wild times of communism in the 70s, for nearly 30 years leads with the grace of God the Metropolis of Korça, marks important international meetings. Rapporteur, participant in the drafting groups of various texts, declarations, messages. High-level representative in the World Orthodox Church. Working groups in the World Council of Churches. Member of important working groups (Joint Working Group) with a five-year mandate for drafting, cooperation between the World Council of Churches and the Roman Catholic Church. Universal thoughts on the reality of today's human society, its values, the Church, faith, as a fundamental right of man as an icon of God and his image.

Together with Archbishop Anastasios, his close and closest collaborator, His Grace Joan, represents the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, for a decade, in the drafting of very important documents for the preparation of the Great and Holy Synod of Crete. June 2016. His special contribution to this Synod remains point 6 of the document of the Holy and Great Synod: “The Orthodox Church, in our day’s approach to marriage, considers the indissoluble bond of love between man and woman “a great mystery in Christ and in the Church”. In the same way, it calls the family, which originates from marriage and constitutes the only guarantee for the upbringing of children, a “small church”. The Church constantly emphasizes the value of self-control. Christian asceticism is fundamentally different from any other type of dualistic asceticism, which separates man from life and his neighbor. On the contrary, it connects it with the life of the Holy Mysteries of the Church. Self-control does not belong only to monastic life. Ascetic morality is characteristic of Christian life in all its expressions”.

APOSTLE OF LOVE, OF RESURRECTION, OF REUNION, OF THE PROSPERITY OF THE METROPOLITAN CITY OF KORCA

"If the Lord had not been on our side, … then the waters would have covered us… . Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth." (Psalm 124:2, 4, 8).

The miracle of modern times, displayed with greatness for all, realized with rare stoicism by the holy Archbishop Anastasios, made us witnesses of the Resurrection and Resurrection of the Church, "that with the stones that were thrown at us we built churches, where we pray for all, schools where we educated generations, canteens where we fed the poor, clinics where we healed the sick."

From the destructive ashes of the past, the Holy and God-saved Metropolis of Korça rises as a testimony, a gift from God, which after destruction and darkness began the first harvests of post-mortem growth.

32 local, theologically educated clergy serve with dedication and love the people of God. 7 Christian Education teachers work with devotion with groups of children and young people to instill faith in the way of God, according to the commandment "Your law, O Lord, we teach generation after generation."

For more than 20 years, the "Frymë Dashurie" kindergarten, in the city of Korça, Pogradec, has been conveying knowledge, the spirit of humanism to young children, as a continuation of Orthodox life and community.

90 students at the "Platon" College, one of the best educational institutions in Korça, study for intellectual formation with deep educational and scientific knowledge. Preparing worthy citizens, a priority for representing the best human and spiritual values.

In every village, churches built from the ground up and others reconstructed and rebuilt.

The Ministry of Love, a soup kitchen that has been feeding the poor on weekdays for more than 25 years, operates by fulfilling the evangelical obligation, the message of Christ "... For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me", (Matthew 25: 35-36a). An initiative based on human feelings and contributions that the believers of Korça offer for this soup kitchen, as solidarity to support and help each other.

“…I was sick and you visited me” , Christ commanded. The Evangelization Diagnostic Clinic, for more than 25 years, has been contributing with great humanity to life. Free medicines for everyone regardless of faith. Diagnostic services. Laboratory. Thanks to faith in the Orthodox Church, benefactors offer various medical assistance and medications.

Every day of the week, seven churches operate in service to the flock of Christ, built almost from the ground up. The restoration of the historic Cathedral of the Life-Giving Source to its identity, the latest project in progress.

This reality amazes today every local and foreign visitor who comes to Korça, now transformed into a place of pilgrimage and spiritual attraction. Easter, Christmas, Holy Water, the Dormition of the Theotokos (Saint Mary) and many other church holidays have today taken on a popular character, making Korça the city of Orthodox holidays. Thanks to this revival and flourishing of the Orthodox Church, as well as of the Holy Metropolis of Korça, under the leadership of its honored Metropolitan, visionary Bishop Joan Pelushi, who guides:

“We will either be prophets of the Most High God or false prophets. There is no middle ground. A lukewarm faith cannot save. By not telling others the truth, we show that we do not love them. The greatest friend is the one who pushes us towards salvation, not the one who speaks sweet words to us. Often the truth does not coincide with what the rulers of this world or the people want to hear. Christianity is not to please the rulers of this world, or to entertain people, but to tell the truth and save them. The prophetic role of the church is to say what the Lord says.”

Korça would honor its son, the shepherd, its teacher "For outstanding contribution to the cultivation of tolerance and religious understanding. Scientist, publisher, translator of theological books in the Albanian language. Helper in the emancipation and civic brotherhood for the Korça Region and beyond", July 2003, "Honorary Citizen of the Korça Region".

And further "For outstanding merits for the revival of faith as well as for numerous works in the humanitarian and social fields" , awarded by the Municipal Council of the city of Korça, in August 2008, "Honorary Citizen".

NEW CHAPTER FOR THE ORTHODOX CHURCH AND ALBANIA…

33 years of rebirth from death to resurrection of the Orthodox Church. The miracle that God gave to Albania. It marks the first chapter of the Church after the savage communism. Mission accomplished! The work of Archbishop Anastasios, as universal and magnificent, can be described and compared to the works of the apostles, like St. Paul, as the founding architect of the apostolic Church, as a Hierarch in the footsteps of St. Basil the Great, St. John the Baptist, St. Gregory the Theologian, on whose day he also passed away.

The preparation of the local clergy, especially the formation of the Holy Synod of the Church, in 1998, will further magnify the work of Archbishop Anastasios, the ordination after 44 years of communism of Bishop Joan Pelushi, as the first Albanian bishop, for whom Archbishop Anastasios will see his dream come true:

"Blessed be God for his gift, which cannot be expressed in words. Today, the dream that has possessed my being for the last seven years is becoming a reality. After 96 new clergymen who have been ordained priests and deacons of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, the first Albanian Bishop is ordained after the dissolution of the Church of Albania during the long-term atheist persecution."

The closest collaborator, the beloved son of the Archbishop, his Albanian firstborn, bearer of the way of the Cross and Resurrection, worthy devotee of the teachings of Christ, His faithful apostle who in the wild years of communism, the '70s, experienced and experiences the arduous path of the saints who built the Church with blood and faith woven with glory, the Most Gracious and Powerful Joan Pelushi, as a wise student of the way of God, the teachings of Archbishop Anastas, as a philosopher of the way of Christ and the holy doctrine, best conveys his great message and prophetic word as the future Archbishop of Albania.

"... Develop yourselves, O children of Christ, by managing your own household, by doing everything good and pleasing to the Lord," Bishop Melito of Philadelphia would request and emphasize in 1998, at the enthronement of Bishop Joan as Metropolitan of Korca.

By Ferdinand Samardzi: Joan Pelushi from communism to Christ, to the head of the

The passing of His Beatitude Archbishop Anastasios marks the beginning of a new chapter, a continuation of the mission of Christ, the saints, and the teachings of Archbishop Anastasios. The Holy Synod of the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania, meeting in an extraordinary session on January 25, 2025, at 11:30 a.m., expresses its deep sorrow for the repose in the Lord of the Father and Chief Shepherd, the late Archbishop of Tirana, Durrës and All Albania, His Eminence Anastasios. Decides: Elects the Metropolitan of Korça, His Eminence Joani, Locum Tenens of the Archbishopric.

The death of Archbishop Anastasios, a deep experience and pain for all. The people of God in mourning. All of Albania, all Albanians, in mourning. Yes, all friends and all those who knew and met Archbishop Anastasios, feel pain. Friends and participants from Albania and the whole world. A magnificent, deifying ceremony for the life and work of Archbishop Anastasios. Exaltation of his brilliant work. All eyes have turned to Albania. The whole world, the media and television channels of Albania and Europe have invaded the Cathedral of the Resurrection of Christ and are following the mournful hymns of the farewell service.

A great giant undertaking will follow and receive extraordinary appreciation for the management of the event that is experienced as a great national, world event. Great high hierarchs from the world, such as Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I, etc., political personalities, heads of government of Greece, Albania, present, lecturers, will experience the event before their eyes as a prologue of deep pain and great love in the prestigious leadership of the supervisor of the Archbishopric Throne, the newly elected, Bishop Joan Pelushi. Such events rarely happen in life, in history, but they reveal once and for all the universal values ??of the extraordinary performance of the shepherd who led it with such pathos and divine devotion. This event made Albania that day the capital of the world. Bishop Joanin described him as a strong strategist, a magnificent leader!

By Ferdinand Samardzi: Joan Pelushi from communism to Christ, to the head of the

The work of Archbishop Anastasios is unique, universal, cosmic – His Eminence John will sing it in his timeless words. Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord. Yes, says the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors; and their works follow them with them (Rev. 14:13). These words of God teach us that our works are not forgotten with the end of earthly life. They are performed within a limited period of time, but acquire an eternal dimension, following us into the afterlife.

This is the vision that guides the mindset of Archbishop Ioannis in his path and work as a shepherd of God. Archbishop Ioannis would compare the great role and care, the efforts of Archbishop Anastasios in building the church infrastructure, opening kindergartens, schools, professional institutes, the establishment of the Logos University College as the first institution of Orthodox higher education in Albania, calling that the Church does not exist only for itself but for everyone, with Saint Paul the Apostle who built the church, the flock and handed over the bishop, as he handed over the first Albanian bishop after the fall of communism, Archbishop Ioannis himself. His Grace Ioannis would appreciate Archbishop Anastasios for the struggle and continuous efforts that he made not only for building the walls of the church but for creating the right spirit that was needed within the Church, so that God would be worshiped in spirit and in truth (Jn 4:23).

By Ferdinand Samardzi: Joan Pelushi from communism to Christ, to the head of the

I would call the extraordinary contribution of Archbishop Anastasios a great, important factor in strengthening the dialogue between peoples around the world, in the books and articles that he offered as a deep theological support for this dialogue. His efforts to respect the dignity of freedom of every individual have now become an important point of reference, not only in the field of interreligious dialogue, but also in that of human thought as a whole. His well-known words, that “The oil of the lamp should not be used by any party to ignite conflicts, but to heal wounds and calm hearts”, are now a powerful leitmotif when talking about the role that religion should play in today's conflict-ridden world, emphasizes Bishop Joani.

Archbishop Anastasios, with his living example, would inspire everyone with unwavering faith in God. His proverbial saying “God will not abandon us” spread faith and hope among all believers, all people. The more time passes, the clearer it becomes for all of us the greatness of Archbishop Anastasios’ work. Therefore, His Eminence John emphasizes that we should not grieve, because “God is not the God of the dead, but of the living” (Matt. 22:32).

By Ferdinand Samardzi: Joan Pelushi from communism to Christ, to the head of the

A great personality, a high and well-known public Hierarch, Academician, Scientist, Researcher, Theologian, Student and worthy Follower of Christ, bearer of the Cross of Christ even in the savagery of communism, embracing it with ardent love, champion of great values ??for today's human society, of religion, of faith, of the great role that the mission of religion plays in the world today for security and peace in the global war against aggressive, radical currents, in continuity, with values ??like Archbishop Anastasios and the other holy Hierarchs of the Church, the Most Gracious Joan Pelushi is more than worthy to enjoy the archiepiscopal throne, the throne of the cross, of suffering, of love, of devotion, as Archbishop of Albania, pride for all Albanians, as an Albanian, a son of this country.
