Brazil's Supreme Court rejects request for Ervin Mata's release

The Brazilian Supreme Court has rejected the request for the release of Ervin Mata.

According to reports by "Euronews Albania", the man wanted by Albanian authorities, who was arrested in Brazil, will remain in custody during the extradition process.

Mata lived between Brazil and Paraguay, and at the time of his arrest, he handed over to the police forged Paraguayan documents with a birthplace in the United Kingdom.

The 39-year-old was also found with several foreign identification documents, including a Bulgarian passport and Bulgarian identity card, which were seized by local authorities.

Ervin Mata was arrested in the center of Ilhabela, on the coast of São Paulo, after intelligence information indicated that he had traveled from the Baixada Santista region on the northern coast. The State Police also reacted to Mata's arrest, announcing that his extradition to Albania is expected.

In November 2023, the Special Prosecution Office declared Ervin Mata wanted as part of a criminal group that trafficked drugs from South America. Ervin Mata is also accused of the criminal offenses of murder and money laundering. Four cocaine shipments seized in 2021 in the Netherlands, Brazil, Germany and Spain have become the subject of an investigation by the Special Prosecution Office SPAK against members of Ervin Mata's group.

It concerns a quantity of 931 kg of cocaine and various types of narcotics, which were seized in four countries and SPAK has proven that the organizers of the shipment of cocaine from Latin American countries to Europe were precisely Albanians, led by Ervin Mata. /CNA
