"GPT Chat Dangerous for Children"/ Florida Sues OpenAI and Sam Altman

The state of Florida has filed a civil lawsuit against OpenAI and the company's CEO, Sam Altman, accusing them of being aware of the risks posed by ChatGPT, especially to minors, but failing to take sufficient safety measures.

The lawsuit, the first of its kind against OpenAI by a U.S. state, was filed Monday in Florida's Tenth District Court. It includes allegations of deceptive and unfair trade practices, negligence and violations of product liability laws. Authorities also seek to hold Sam Altman personally liable for the alleged damages to Florida residents.

During a press conference, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier stated that OpenAI has chosen "the race for artificial intelligence over child safety" and "profit over public safety."

The lawsuit lists a number of accusations against ChatGPT, including claims that the platform has aided perpetrators of mass attacks, encouraged suicide, caused public humiliation, created addiction in minors, and negatively impacted their ability to think critically.

One of the main points of the lawsuit is the lack of effective parental controls. According to authorities, the free version of ChatGPT does not have sufficient mechanisms for age verification and does not require children's accounts to be linked to their parents. The lawsuit also claims that parents do not have the ability to see the information their children share with the chatbot.

The case is also related to a criminal investigation launched in April by Florida authorities to determine whether OpenAI was responsible for a shooting at Florida State University. According to authorities, the suspected perpetrator had multiple conversations with ChatGPT before the incident.

OpenAI has denied any responsibility for the incident, stating that ChatGPT only provided factual information that was publicly available and did not incite or promote illegal or harmful activities. Uthmeier said he expects other US states to join the legal initiative against OpenAI. /CNA
