Vogue Philippines has unveiled its April cover star, Apo Whang-Od, a move that makes the 106-year-old from the Philippines the oldest person ever to appear on the cover of Vogue.

Whang-Od, also known as Maria Oggay, has been perfecting the art of tattooing since she was a teenager, learning under the guidance of her father.

Residing in the mountain village of Buscalan, about 15 hours north of Manila in Kalinga province, she is considered the country's oldest mambabatok, or traditional Kalinga tattoo artist.

“E shpallur si mambabatok i fundit i gjeneratës së saj, ajo ka ngulitur simbolet e fisit Kalinga, që nënkuptojnë forcën, guximin dhe bukurinë,  në lëkurën e mijëra njerëzve që kanë bërë pelegrinazhin në Buscalan”, tha Vogue Filipine në një postim në rrjetet sociale .

Arti mund t'u transmetohet vetëm të afërmve të gjakut dhe Whang Od ka disa vite që stërvit mbesat e saj Elyang Wigan dhe Grace Palicas.

"Unë jam e vetmja që kam mbetur gjallë që ende bëj tatuazhe. Por nuk kam frikë se tradita do të marrë fund sepse (po stërvit) mjeshtrat e ardhshëm të tatuazheve, tha Whang Od.

“Tradita do të vazhdojë për aq kohë sa njerëzit vazhdojnë të vijnë për të bërë tatuazhe”, shtoi ajo.

"As long as I can see well, I'll keep tattooing. I'll stop once my vision gets blurry."

Vogue Philippines editor-in-chief Bea Valdes said the publication's staff unanimously decided to have Whang-Od on the front page of the magazine. “We felt she represented our ideals of what is beautiful in our Filipino culture.

"We believe that the concept of beauty should evolve and include diverse and inclusive faces and shapes. What we hope to talk about is the beauty of humanity," Valdes added.

Before Whang-Od's appearance in Philippine Vogue, the record for the oldest Vogue cover model was held by actress Judi Dench, who appeared on the cover of British Vogue in 2020 at the age of 85./ CNA.al
