OFFICIAL/ Xabi Alonso takes over the leadership of the German club

Xabi Alonso is Bayer Leverkusen's newest coach. The famous former midfielder of some of the biggest European clubs gets ready for the next step in his managerial career as he has taken the place of the sacked Gerardo Seoane.

Leverkusen has made a disastrous start to the new football season, where in the first eight weeks it has received only five points and is ranked in the penultimate place in the Bundesliga.

Apparently, the loss in the Champions League against Porto proved to be too much for Seoane, with the club leaders immediately deciding on the dismissal. Alonso has been free since May when he cut ties with Real Sociedad B to seek a new adventure.

The parties have reached an agreement on a contract valid until June 2024, and the Spaniard is expected to be officially presented tomorrow at 11:30 a.m., at the "Bay Arena" stadium.

In 2021, Alonso helped the Basque team climb to the Segunda Division after a 60-year wait. Another alternative considered by Leverkusen was Thomas Tuchel, but the German rejected the offer of "Aspirins".

Gerardo Seoane led Leverkusen to the 3rd place in the last season but the negative start of the new edition cost the Swiss technician dearly.
