Scandal erupts in Italy/ Investigation reveals 12 famous footballers in sports

A major scandal has erupted in Italian football regarding illegal betting by footballers.

According to recent reports from "Corriere della Sera", an in-depth investigation by the Milan Prosecutor's Office has uncovered a vast network of illegal betting involving dozens of people, including 12 well-known Serie A footballers.

The investigation, which began after examining the phones of two well-known Italian players, Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Fagioli, has brought to light a well-organized betting scheme that has operated for more than two years, specifically from December 2021 to October 2023.

During this period, the players did not directly influence the manipulation of the results of football matches, but placed bets on other sports disciplines through illegal sites, violating the rules of the Italian Football Federation and criminal legislation.

The amount seized so far amounts to 1.5 million euros, while five requests for house arrest have been issued.

Investigations have revealed that footballers used various methods to repay their betting debts, including paying with luxury Rolex watches or other high-value items that could be easily traced by authorities.

A jeweler in Milan has been identified as a key point in this scheme, where players would go to pay off debts or repay money.

The names being mentioned in the list of those investigated are sensational and have caused a wave of shock in the sports environment: Alessandro Florenzi, Nicolò Zaniolo, Mattia Perin, Weston McKennie, Leandro Paredes, Angel Di Maria, Raoul Bellanova, Samuele Ricci, Cristian Buonaiuto and Matteo Cancellieri are some of the figures involved in this investigation.
