Ronaldo and Portugal eliminated from World Cup, Spain qualifies with extra-time goal

The Spanish national team has secured qualification for the quarter-finals of the World Cup after defeating Portugal with a minimum score of 1-0, thanks to a goal scored in the extra minutes of the match.

Midfielder Mikel Merino became the hero of the Spaniards by scoring the winning goal in the 91st minute.

This elimination also marks the end of the journey in this tournament for Portugal and captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who ends his career without managing to win the only major trophy he was missing in his drawer.

Throughout the 90 minutes of play, both teams created numerous scoring opportunities, with the Lusitanians being unlucky in the first half, hitting the crossbar through defender Nuno Mendes.

On the other side, goalkeeper Diogo Costa kept his team in the game with several crucial saves, before surrendering in the final seconds.

In the next stage, Spain will face the winner of the USA-Belgium pair.
