Chancellor Scholz supports footballers who shut their mouths in Qatar

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz welcomed the gesture by German footballers who covered their mouths ahead of their World Cup match against Japan in response to FIFA's ban on captains wearing rainbow armbands.

"What must be remembered is that the players of the German team found a way to send a strong message," Scholz said in an interview with German weekly 'Focus'.

The gesture was a response to FIFA's decision to ban a plan by seven European national teams to wear rainbow colored captain's armbands in protest at what they claim are human rights abuses in Qatar.

Asked if he intends to go to Qatar to support the German team in case they reach the final, Scholz replied: "I will decide at the right time," reports AFP.

After the surprising defeat by Japan (2:1) in the first match, on November 27 the German footballers will face Spain, which convincingly won against Costa Rica with a score of 7:0 at the beginning of the tournament./REL
