WHO special report: 1 in 12 hospitals could face closure due to climate change

The special report on health and climate change, published by the World Health Organization, warns that one in 12 hospitals could face closure due to climate change.

The report calls for urgent action to protect health systems in a rapidly warming world.

This follows the launch of the Health Action Plan in Belém, Brazil, a key initiative of COP30 that places health at the center of climate policy.

“The climate crisis is a health crisis, not in the distant future, but here and now. This special report provides evidence on the impact of climate change on individuals and health systems, as well as real-world examples of what countries can do, and are doing, to protect health and strengthen health systems,” said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

The report finds that 3.3 to 3.6 billion people live in areas highly vulnerable to climate impacts, while hospitals face a 41% higher risk of damage from extreme weather compared to 1990.

The report highlights major gaps in health adaptation planning.

Only 54% of national health adaptation plans assess risks to health institutions.

The number of countries with early warning systems for multiple hazards doubled between 2015 and 2023, but coverage remains uneven, especially in least developed countries and small island states./CNA
