The population of Tirana reached 598,176 inhabitants in the 2023 census, but the latest data show that only 52% of them (310 thousand) were born in Tirana and almost half of the inhabitants are from other counties.

According to detailed data from INSTAT, the Dibrans are the largest community after the Tirana people in the Capital, as 6.5% of the population in the capital had Dibër as their birthplace, followed by the Korçars who are the third largest community, as 6% of the Capital's population they were born in Korça.

Then, the large majority in Tirana are those born in Fier, Berat, who respectively occupied 5.1% each of the capital's population.

Over 27,000 inhabitants or 4.6% of the capital's population were born in Kukës. Lezha and Durrësi had the smallest movements towards Tirana, as those born in these counties accounted for 1.9 and 2.4% of the total population of Tirana Municipality, respectively.

In Tirana in 2023, there were over 14,000 foreign citizens, who accounted for 2.4 percent of the capital's population.

The municipality of Tirana, the largest in the country, which is a center of gravity compared to others for internal emigration, has only increased by 40 thousand 754 inhabitants from 2011 to 2023 and in total there are 598,176 inhabitants.

The small increase in the population of the capital is not good news for the builders who are working on wrong projections until now, with data that Tirana grows by 20-25 thousand inhabitants per year.

The population of Tirana has undergone a strong demographic transition. Locals since the first years of the transition have been directed to emigrate, as their absence has been filled with income from other regions of the country.

The demographic transition continues to be intense as more and more educated people are fleeing from Tirana abroad.
