Cardiovascular events are a serious health risk, especially for the elderly. Of course, there are ways to reduce the likelihood of them occurring. Among these is exercise. According to a new study, it doesn't take much, as long as there is consistency.
Specifically, based on this research, published in the scientific journal Circulation, it was found that for older adults, just three minutes of moderate, occasional activity each day can be life-saving. The study showed that such a short time on a daily basis is enough to significantly reduce the risk levels for the occurrence of a cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack, but also for a possible death that can be caused by such an episode.
The research team analyzed data from people wearing fitness trackers on their wrists, which recorded their levels of physical activity.
Previous research has found that as people age, many people reduce their physical activity, for various reasons, thereby increasing their chances of having a cardiovascular event. Some, in fact, stop exercising almost completely.

To examine this possibility, the researchers used data from 24,139 people, with an average age of 62, who had worn fitness tracking devices placed on their wrists for at least seven days and who reported not exercising regularly.
They compared those whose devices indicated regular moderate activity with those who were less active and concluded that people who engaged in regular moderate "casual" activity significantly reduced their odds of having a cardiovascular event or dying from it.
It turned out that people who were moderately active for at least three minutes on a regular basis reduced their chances of suffering a heart attack, stroke or any other type of cardiovascular event.

Some gender differences were also identified, for example, men were found to participate in fewer "casual" activities than women. Also, greater health benefits were observed with increased "casual" activities and when they were more intense.
Therefore, according to the study, the key to prevention is for older adults to participate in daily activities, such as preparing their own meals instead of ordering them in, cleaning the house, mowing the lawn or gardening. Some of these may also be enjoyable or - at least - less tiring, and therefore more easily accessible./CNA
