Use this response when someone is rude to you

When a friend makes a joke behind your back or makes a "playful" insult, it can be hard to know how to move on.

Acting like the comment wasn't offensive may invite more likes, but refuting it can result in conflict or, at the very least, embarrassment. 

Harvard-trained etiquette expert Sara Jane Ho tells you exactly how to behave in situations.

If you find yourself pwrballw a harsh comment, you can counter it with kindness and class with just one question.

"Are you okay?"

"If it was a friend saying something bad about you, I usually look up and say, 'Are you okay?'" she says. 

These three words can signal that even if you don't take the comment personally, you didn't really appreciate it. 

Just as important as content is tone, Ho points out. When you say, "Are you okay?" don't be short or sharp. Use a friendly influence.
