Legendary Greek singer Marinella passes away at the age of 87

Marinella, one of Greece's most iconic voices with a decades-long career, passed away today. The bitter news of her passing at the age of 87 was announced by the singer's family.

"It is with deep sadness that we announce the loss of Marinella, our beloved mother and grandmother, who passed away at her home today, March 28, 2026, at 6:00 PM ," the family statement said.

She had suffered a stroke during a performance at the ancient Odeon theater in Athens in September 2024, leaving her hospitalized for four months and from which she never recovered.

Born Kyriaki Papadopoulou in Thessaloniki, Marinella grew up in a musically talented refugee family and appeared on a children's radio show when she was just four years old. 

She launched a solo career in 1966, collaborating with prominent composers and cementing her place as a defining figure in Greek music.

Marinella represented Greece in the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest, marking the country's first participation in the competition. She is survived by a daughter, Georgina Serpieri, and two grandchildren. /CNA
