The Minister of Justice, Ulsi Manja, accompanied by the General Director of Prisons, Mr. Klevis Qose, in the presence of the People's Advocate, Mrs. Erinda Ballanca, the ambassador of the British Kingdom, Alastair King-Smith, the ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, representatives from the US embassy, ??local authorities, representatives of faiths in Pogradec and civil society organizations that monitor the prison system, inaugurated the Institution of Execution of Decisions Penale (IEVP) new in Pojska, Pogradec.
This modern structure, built in accordance with the recommendations of the Ombudsman and the Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT), will accommodate girls and women in conflict with the law.


In his speech, the Minister of Justice emphasized the importance attached to the penitentiary system and the commitment of the Ministry of Justice in implementing the recommendations of the Ombudsman and CPT. "It is good news that together we have managed to do a good job, so that women and girls in conflict with the law have a dignified treatment, as provided for in the law, but also by all European standards of treatment of detainees and convicts," said Manja.
Further, Minister Manja recalled some of the challenges and radical changes that have been made in the system, which clearly show the Albanian government's commitment to reforming this sector and breaking away from the communist past. "From the beginning, when I assumed the position of Minister of Justice, I asked myself a question: what will be my objectives in relation to the penitentiary system? The closing of the prison of Zaharia, the closing of the prison of Ali Demi and the open prison were some of the priority works, which were successfully completed today. A thank you for the cooperation of all our partners for all the unsparing support," continued Manja.

During the visit, the guests had the opportunity to inspect the various workshops inside the prison, where educational and professional activities are carried out for the convicts. Also, during the ceremony, an agreement was signed between the Directorate of Prisons and the English Embassy for the improvement of Fushë Kruja Prison.
In conclusion, Minister Manja guaranteed the support of the Albanian government for the continuation of reforms in the penitentiary system. "We are all aware of the attention that the Rama government has paid to the penitentiary system and we will continue to work with unwavering commitment to reform the system according to the best European standards," said the Minister./CNA
