Ten people have died and around 20 others were injured in a fire that broke out on the seventh floor of a nursing home in Tuzla on Tuesday evening, authorities in Bosnia said.
The victims are residents of the house and their bodies will be sent for identification and autopsy, according to authorities.
It is not clear what caused the fire.
The Mayor of Tuzla, Zijad Llugavic, has called an extraordinary meeting for this morning, at which data will be presented about the causes of the fire, the number of victims and the condition of the injured.
In an official announcement a few hours after the fire, the nursing home confirmed the number of dead and injured, and added that the injured are being treated at the Tuzla University Clinical Center.
According to her, among the injured are police officers, firefighters, medical workers and employees of the nursing home in Tuzla.
" With rapid intervention, the fire was brought under control and extinguished by members of the Tuzla Professional Fire Department, with the support of the Srebrenik Professional Fire Department, the Upper Tuzla and Tuzla volunteer fire departments, and the Tuzla Ministry of Internal Affairs Police Directorate ," the home stated.
The Bosnian Interior Ministry announced on Tuesday evening that an on-site investigation will be conducted when the right conditions are created.
A large number of firefighters participated in extinguishing the fire, while police and emergency services also attended the scene.
The Prime Minister of Tuzla Canton, Irfan Halilagic, told Bosnia's public service that a solution for temporary housing for the house's residents is being sought.
The Prime Minister of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Nermin Niksic, announced on Bosnian television that the Government will participate in the reconstruction of the house and care for its residents.
" In the coming period, we will form a team of the Bosnian Government that will visit institutions under Bosnian jurisdiction and ask the cantonal authorities to do the same for institutions under their jurisdiction, when something like this happens, so as not to give out general information. Tonight we heard a lot of information from residents. However, we have to wait to see what exactly caused the tragedy ," Niksic said./ REL
