"There is no reason for Syrians to seek asylum in Germany," Merz: We

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has said there is no longer any reason to grant asylum to Syrians in Germany after the end of their country's civil war, adding that they will be encouraged to return to help rebuild their homeland.

"The civil war in Syria is over. There are no longer any reasons to grant asylum in Germany, which means we can start the repatriation process," Merz said during a visit to the northern German town of Husum on Monday, also mentioning deportations of those who refuse to return to their homeland.

His statements contradict those of German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, who, after a visit to Damascus last week, expressed doubts that many Syrians would choose to return, given the ongoing destruction and instability, which, he said, make it difficult to live a good life.

The German foreign minister's comments sparked a strong reaction from his own party, the CDU. Chancellor Merz also pledged that Berlin would contribute to the reconstruction of Syria, but noted that he expected many of the Syrian refugees currently in Germany to return home to participate in the process.

"Without these people, reconstruction is impossible. And those in Germany who refuse to return to their country, we can certainly deport them in the near future ," Merz added.

According to official figures, around 951,400 Syrians were in Germany at the end of August, including 920 against whom deportation orders were pending. /CNA
