Major fire at Bangladesh airport/Flights cancelled

Bangladesh's largest airport was engulfed today by a massive fire in the cargo terminal.

The fire at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka started at around 2:30 pm local time, sending thick black smoke that was visible for miles around the scene.

Airport officials announced that all flights were suspended on Saturday as a result of the fire.

It was the third major fire in the country in just five days. The biggest of these, on Tuesday, killed at least 16 people when flames that started in a chemical warehouse spread to a garment factory in a neighborhood of Dhaka, one of the world's most populous cities.

About 36 firefighting units were deployed to extinguish the fire at the airport, according to Talha Bin Jashim, a spokesman for the fire service.

Members of the country's air force, navy, border guards and army were assisting in the effort, a military public relations office said./ CNA, translated from The New York Times
