Zelensky visits the troops in Donetsk

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Tuesday that he was visiting military troops on the front line.

He did not give specific details about the location, but posted on the social network 'Telegram' a series of photos with Ukrainian soldiers at his side.

"Our defenders on the front line. Today I am here to congratulate our fighters on the Day of the Ukrainian Marines," wrote Mr. Zelensky.

A statement from the presidency said that Mr. Zelensky had met with Ukrainian troops in the towns of Vugledar and Maryinka, in the Donetsk region.

The Ukrainian leader has made several visits to the front line since Russia launched the full-scale offensive in February last year. In recent weeks, he has made several international trips aimed at securing new armies for Ukraine and persuading allies to send advanced F16 fighter jets.

On Monday US Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said that "at best it will take a few months" to decide on supplying Ukraine with F-16 jets.

Speaking to reporters, Mr. Kendall said these planes "will give the Ukrainians a temporary capability that they don't currently have, but without a dramatic change in the battlefield."

According to Secretary Kendall, "air power has so far not been a decisive factor" in the war, while on the other hand he mentioned the effectiveness of land-based air defense systems./VOA
