Zelensky: Russia has sent 170,000 troops to attack Donetsk region

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday that Russia has deployed around 170,000 troops to Ukraine's eastern Donetsk region, where they are trying to capture the Pokrovsk fortress, in a major bid for a victory in battle.

The president rejected recent Russian claims that the devastated city is surrounded after more than a year of fighting and acknowledged that some Russian units had infiltrated the city, but insisted that Ukrainian forces were eliminating them.

"The situation in Pokrovsk is difficult. There are Russians in Pokrovsk. They are being destroyed, they are being gradually destroyed, because we need to keep our personnel," Zelensky said at a press conference in Kiev.
