Ukraine and Russia carry out attacks on each other's territory

A swarm of Russian drones struck the Russian port city of Temryuk in the Krasnodar region at midnight, setting fire to large oil tanks and damaging industrial facilities, according to regional authorities and Russian media reports on December 25.

The attacks came as Russian forces launched a massive wave of drone attacks across Ukraine, hitting energy infrastructure and residential areas in several regions, Ukrainian officials said.

According to the Krasnodar regional operations headquarters, two oil tanks have caught fire after the attack in the port city on the Sea of ??Azov in southern Russia.

The flames have spread to about 2,000 square meters, while preliminary reports have not mentioned any casualties. In the images published by some media, flames were seen coming from a nearby oil refinery.

Speaking to Reuters news agency, a Ukrainian Security Service official attributed the fire to a Ukrainian drone strike, although Kiev has not claimed responsibility for the attack.

Officials have also reported attacks on production centers and agricultural equipment in several nearby villages.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed on December 25 that it had shot down between 141 and 170 drones overnight, including seven in the Krasnodar region, while the others were in the Moscow and Bryansk regions.

Ukrainian forces have carried out several drone operations in recent months targeting energy and transport infrastructure in Russia.

Damage has also been reported from Russian attacks in Ukraine.

In the Odessa region, a Russian drone reportedly killed one person and wounded two others. In Kharkiv, a Russian strike killed a 51-year-old man, according to several Ukrainian services.

"Russia has not stopped the brutal bombing of civilians in Ukraine even on the holy night of Christmas," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said on December 25.

"Russia is deliberately destroying energy and civilian infrastructure, leaving people without electricity, water and heating in low temperatures," he added.

The Ukrainian Air Force has reported 131 drone attacks, while 106 are believed to have been shot down by defense forces.

The war in Ukraine began on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia by hitting the country's economy with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes. /REL
