Turkey arrests 115 suspected IS members who were "planning New Year's

Turkish authorities have announced that they have thwarted several attacks planned for Christmas and New Year's Day, arresting more than 100 suspected members of the extremist group, the Islamic State (IS).

The massive raids were carried out at 124 addresses across Istanbul, the city's chief prosecutor said. Firearms, ammunition and "organizational documents" were seized in the operation.

Officials have said IS supporters have been actively planning attacks across Turkey this week, especially against those who do not belong to the Islamic faith.

Police have arrested 115 suspects, but efforts are continuing to arrest 22 others, the statement said.

The prosecutor's office said the suspects had been in contact with IS operatives outside Turkey.

This announcement comes two days after Turkish intelligence agents conducted raids against the group on the Afghan-Pakistani border.

A Turkish national suspected of having played a key role in an IS wing in the region has been detained and charged with planning attacks against civilians.

Turkish security services regularly target suspected IS links.

Turkey shares a 900-kilometer border with Syria, where the group continues to operate in several regions.

Syria's President Ahmed al-Sharaa, who has close ties to the Turkish government, has vowed to work with the United States and Europe to eradicate surviving IS elements.

The US launched a wave of attacks against the group's positions across Syria days ago in response to the killing of three Americans.

Two American soldiers and a civilian translator were killed by armed IS attackers earlier this month./ Rel
