State Department imposes sanctions on 5 European figures/ Among them is the former EU commissioner

The State Department announced it was banning the entry of five European figures it accused of leading efforts to pressure American technology firms to censor or suppress American views.

The Europeans, described by Secretary of State Marco Rubio as "radical" activists and "armed" non-governmental organizations, have come out against a new visa policy announced in May that restricts the entry of foreigners deemed responsible for censorship of protected speech in the United States.

"For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organized efforts to force American platforms to punish American views they oppose. The Trump administration will no longer tolerate these ugly acts of extraterritorial censorship," Rubio posted on 'X'.

The five Europeans were identified by Sarah Rogers, the undersecretary of state for public diplomacy, in a series of social media posts.

They include leaders of organizations addressing digital hate and a former European Union commissioner who clashed with tech billionaire Elon Musk over broadcasting an online interview with US President Donald Trump. /CNA
