"We will not build settlements in Gaza"/ Israeli Defense Minister

Following statements that the Israeli army would never fully withdraw from the Gaza Strip, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has said that the Israeli government has no intention of establishing settlements in the Palestinian enclave.

Contradicting repeated assurances by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and in contradiction to the US peace plan, Katz said earlier today that the Israeli army would never fully withdraw from Gaza for security reasons and that a civil-military unit would be established in the Palestinian enclave.

"We are deep inside Gaza and we will never abandon all of Gaza. This will never happen. We are there to protect, to prevent what happened," Katz said, referring to Hamas' raid on Israel on October 7, 2023.

In a statement sent to reporters later, Katz's office stressed that the government has no intention of establishing settlements in the Gaza Strip, stressing that Katz's statements in a speech this morning to settlement leaders regarding sending such units to northern Gaza were made only in a security context. /CNA
