Traveling to the US/ Zelensky stops in Canada, meets with Prime Minister Carney

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made a stop in Canada this Saturday, on his way to a meeting with US President Donald Trump, scheduled for Sunday in Florida.

Zelensky met in Halifax with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who said the latest Russian attack underscored the need to stand by Ukraine.

"We have the conditions for a just and lasting peace, but that requires a willing Russia, and the barbarity we saw last night... shows how important it is that we stand by Ukraine," Carney said in a statement.

This Saturday did not pass without incident, as Russia also claimed new advances on the ground with the capture of two towns at different points along the front lines.

Zelensky said the Russian attack showed that Moscow had no intention of ending the invasion that began in February 2022 and which has killed tens of thousands of people.

Russia has accused Ukraine and its European backers of trying to sabotage a previous US-brokered plan to stop the fighting.

Adding to the pressure on the battlefield, Russia announced on Saturday that it had captured two more cities in eastern Ukraine, Myrnograd and Gulyaipole. /CNA
