Trump picks former Arkansas governor as ambassador to Israel

The US President-elect, Donald Trump, will nominate the former governor of Arkansas, Mike Huckabee, for the post of ambassador to Israel.

Huckabee is a staunch defender of Israel, and his nomination for the post comes as Trump has promised to align US foreign policy more closely with Israel's interests.

Israel is currently waging wars in Gaza and Lebanon against two groups designated as terrorist organizations by the US.

"Mike has been a wonderful public servant, governor and leader for many years," Trump said in a Nov. 12 announcement.

“He loves Israel, the people of Israel, and the people of Israel love him. Mike will work tirelessly to bring peace to the Middle East," added Republican Trump.

For years, Huckabee has led tour groups to Israel, often advertising these trips in conservative-leaning media.

David Friedman, who served as the US ambassador to Israel during Trump's first presidential term, said he is delighted with Huckabee's selection for the post of ambassador to Israel.

Trump, who won the presidential election on November 5, will take office as president on January 20, 2025./REL
