Kocani tragedy/ Investigations expanded with 50 more suspects

Intensive investigations continue into the tragic event in Ko?ani, North Macedonia, where 61 people lost their lives in a fire at a discotheque.

It is learned that the investigations have now been expanded to include 50 more people suspected of the incident. So far, 47 individuals and 3 legal entities are suspects.

The investigation involves a number of former and current officials whose omissions allowed the club to operate without meeting the conditions. Among the suspects are three former mayors and three construction inspectors from the Municipality of Kocani, who, according to the investigation, did not conduct any inspections even though the facility had been illegally converted into an entertainment venue. 

State Public Prosecutor Ljubomir Kocevski announced that detention is requested for 4 people, house arrest with a ban on communication for 7 people, and preventive measures have been proposed for 7 others. One of the suspects is not in the country.

"Also, the Directorate for Protection and Rescue has suspected three people who have not conducted any inspections or monitoring of the facility over the years. With their irresponsible actions, they exposed citizens to serious risk to their lives and health," said Kocevski.

The investigation is ongoing and new investigative actions are being taken. /CNA
