In October, as autumn set in and Russia intensified its bombing of Ukraine's energy grid, the government in neighboring Hungary was mobilizing against an enemy of its own.

On billboards, flyers, news, Facebook and other digital platforms, Hungarians everywhere were faced with the image of a bomb, wrapped in a paper that said "sanctions", as well as the message "sanctions from Brussels are destroying us".

Since Russia started the war in Ukraine, at the end of February, the European Union - of which Hungary is also a part - has undertaken a series of sanctions against it.

His traditional pre-election gifts and subsidies were draining the budget and, it seemed, fooling almost no one. There was resentment among teachers, train engineers, gas station attendants and others.

His flattery with Moscow and Beijing was also damaging Budapest's position among EU and NATO allies./ Rel
