NATO chief: We are Russia's next target

NATO chief Mark Rutte called on allies to intensify efforts to strengthen defenses in order to prevent a war launched by Russia that could be "on the scale of a war that our grandparents and great-grandparents experienced."

During a speech in Berlin, Rutte said that many Western military alliance allies do not feel the urgency of the Russian threat to Europe and that they must rapidly increase defense spending and production to prevent a war on the scale experienced by previous generations.

"We are Russia's next target. Many do not feel the urgency. And many believe that time is on our side. It is not. The time is now for action ," Rutte said.

"The conflict is at our doorstep. Russia has brought the war to Europe. We must be prepared ," he added.

According to Rutte, Russia could be ready to use military force against NATO within five years.

For almost four years, Russia has been continuing its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the largest conflict in Europe since World War II. /REL
