US calls on Hamas to hand over weapons after reports of clashes

A senior US military leader responsible for operations in the Middle East has called on Hamas to suspend violence and shootings against innocent Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

Admiral Brad Cooper, head of US Central Command, is calling on the group to seize a historic opportunity for peace by fully withdrawing, strictly adhering to President Trump's 20-point peace plan, and disarming without delay.

He issued the statement after reports emerged of masked Hamas figures carrying out public executions in recent days.

Cooper stated that the US has conveyed its concerns to other countries involved in brokering the recent ceasefire, adding: "We remain very optimistic about the future of peace in the region."

While the UN humanitarian chief, Tom Fletcher, stated that he is "deeply concerned by the evidence of violence against civilians in Gaza."/ CNA, translated by BBC
