NATO's peacekeeping mission in Kosovo, KFOR, said that during this week it has sent additional troops and patrols to the north of Kosovo.

"We are closely monitoring the situation in the north of Kosovo. "KFOR has the capabilities and personnel to provide a safe environment and freedom of movement for all communities, based on our mandate derived from UN Security Council Resolution 1244," KFOR said in a statement.

KFOR said that the increase in military presence has started since October.

On December 10, some local Serbs set up barricades, blocking the roads leading to the two border crossings connecting Kosovo and Serbia, Jarinje and Bernjak. The barricades were set up in protest at the arrest of a former Kosovo Serb policeman, who Kosovo says is suspected of a "terrorist attack" on the offices of the Central Election Commission in the north.

On December 15, Serbia addressed KFOR with the request for the deployment of up to 1,000 Serbian military and police troops in Kosovo.

Serbian officials have argued that they do not expect this request to be approved. Belgrade has also said that the request was made based on Resolution 1244.

KFOR confirmed to Radio Free Europe on December 16 that they accepted Serbia's request, which they said "we are considering"./ VOA
