Russia increases attacks in eastern Ukrainian city

Russian forces are pounding the city of Lysichansk and its environs in an all-out effort to capture the last bastion of resistance in eastern Ukraine's Luhansk province, the province's governor, Serhiy Haidai, said on Saturday.

Ukrainian fighters have spent weeks trying to defend the city and keep it from falling into Russian hands, as neighboring Severodonetsk did a week ago.

Russia's Defense Ministry said its forces took control of an oil refinery on the edge of Lisichansk in recent days, but Governor Haidai reported on Friday that fighting over the facility continued.
