Russia attacks Kiev with barrages of drones and missiles in the middle of the

Russia attacked Kiev overnight with a barrage of drones and self-guided ballistic missiles, Ukrainian officials announced Monday.

The attacks occurred as children across Ukraine were preparing to return to school. In some of them, classes were canceled due to damage to the infrastructure.

A series of explosions rocked the Ukrainian capital in the early hours of the morning. Remnants of intercepted missiles and drones injured three people and damaged two gardens, officials of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine announced. City authorities reported multiple fires as a result of the attacks.

After more than 900 days of war, Russia and Ukraine are showing no sign of backing down or sitting down for talks.

The parties are carrying out ambitious ground offensives. The Ukrainians are pushing deeper into Russia's Kursk region as the Russian army advances into the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Monday that Ukraine's attack on Kursk will not prevent Russian forces from advancing in eastern Ukraine. He said that Ukrainian forces have not achieved their goal of driving out Russian troops.

"The enemy has not fulfilled the main objective he set for himself, which is to stop our offensive in Donbas," Mr. Putin told students at a school in southern Siberia.

However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said last month that the purpose of the Kursk incursion is to create a neutral zone that could prevent further attacks from Moscow across the border.

Mr. Putin said that the Ukrainian offensive in Kursk, which started on August 6, will fail and as a result, as he said, officials in Kiev "will want to move towards peace talks".

Russia fired 35 missiles of various types and 26 Shahed drones into Ukraine overnight from Sunday to Monday, Ukrainian air force officials announced. Ukrainian forces announced that they had shot down 9 ballistic missiles, 13 self-guided missiles and 20 drones./ Voa
