The International Energy Agency has warned that Russia could completely cut off Europe's gas supplies to increase its political influence following the aggression in Ukraine. But on the other hand, Europe is trying to avoid an energy crisis this winter.
In recent days Russia has severely curtailed Europe's gas supplies, blaming technical problems caused by sanctions. Europe accuses the Kremlin of a geopolitical game.
A complete shutdown would plunge Europe into an energy crisis, analyst Tom Marzec-Manser told VOA.
This runs counter to Europe's promise to phase out coal and fossil fuels.
"We need a much faster expansion of the renewable energy sector," says analyst Claudia Kemfert.
European leaders have tried to find other sources in the face of the situation created by Russian gas. Imports of liquefied natural gas from the United States have increased significantly. The EU signed an agreement this month to boost imports from Israel and Egypt. But analysts say Europe will find it difficult to replace Russian gas before winter. A cold season would aggravate the crisis./VOA
