UN: Iran is using the death penalty as a "weapon" to intimidate the

Iran is using the death penalty as a weapon to intimidate the public and suppress dissent, the United Nations said.

The UN said that the execution of protesters without going through proper judicial processes constitutes state murder, which is sanctioned.

Tehran has executed four people in connection with protests that began almost four months ago. Two people are expected to be executed, while 17 others are reported to have been sentenced to death, the UN Human Rights Office said.

“Procedurat penale dhe dënimet me vdekje po përdoren si armë nga Qeveria iraniane për të ndëshkuar personat që marrin pjesë në protesta, dhe synojnë që të nxisin frikë te popullsia në mënyrë që të shtypet disidenca, në shkelje të ligjit ndërkombëtar për të drejtat e njeriut”, tha shefi i Zyrës për të Drejtat e Njeriut, Volker Turk.

Republika Islamike është përballur me një valë protestash që nga vdekja në paraburgim më 16 shtator e Mahsa Amini, 22 vjeçe, e cila ishte arrestuar për shkak të shkeljeve të pretenduara të veshjes së hixhabit, apo shamisë së kokës.

“Shndërrimi në armë i procedurave penale për të ndëshkuar njerëzit që të ushtrojnë të drejtat e tyre themelore – sikurse pjesëmarrja apo organizimi i protestave – përbën vrasje shtetërore të sanksionuar”, tha Turk.

The UN Human Rights Office said it has received information that two more executions will take place, namely 19-year-old Mohammad Boroughani and 22-year-old Mohammad Ghobadiou.

"I repeat my call for the Government of Iran to respect the lives and voices of its people and immediately impose a moratorium on the death penalty and stop all executions," Turk said.

Turk added that Iran must undertake the right reforms for its people and respect and protect human rights./REL
