Brazilian authorities vowed on Monday to defend democracy and condemned "acts of terrorism", a day after thousands of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro attacked and vandalized the country's Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential office building in the capital Brasilia.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, congressional leaders and the head of the Supreme Court issued a statement on Monday saying that "defenders of democracy" in Brazil "reject acts of terrorism, vandalism, crime and coup attempts" and "are united to take institutional action, according to Brazilian law".
President Lula visited the badly damaged buildings late Sunday and decreed a federal security intervention in the city's federal district. The decree gives the government special powers to restore order and law in the capital and lasts until January 31.
Brazilian officials say they have arrested more than 1,200 supporters of Mr Bolsonaro, the former far-right leader who narrowly lost an October election to leftist candidate Lula.
Brazilian authorities said they intend to hold the protesters accountable and will inspect state facilities for fingerprints. The new president, Lula da Silva, strongly condemned the protests.
The attack on Brazilian government buildings is similar to the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol in Washington. However, unlike in Washington, where lawmakers were inside the building on January 6, state facilities in Brasilia were mostly empty.
Jake Sullivan, President Biden's national security adviser, condemned in a tweet, "attempts to undermine democracy in Brazil," as he put it.
This event has also been condemned by other leaders, such as the president of Mexico and the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, who said that Sunday's attack "is an attack on democracy that should not be tolerated".
While human rights organizations, "Human Rights Watch" and "Amnesty International" have requested the investigation of the attack so that those responsible are brought to justice and such a thing does not happen again./VOA
