Chinese Foreign Minister: Will deepen cooperation with Russia

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi defended Beijing's position on the war in Ukraine, and signaled that China will deepen ties with Russia in the coming year, he said on December 25.

Beijing has refused to criticize Moscow for its invasion of Ukraine and has instead blamed the United States and NATO for the war.

European Union chief Charles Michel said on November 12 that the bloc expects China to "use all the means at its disposal" to push Russia to comply with international law.

While China remains a major trading partner of the EU, European officials have repeatedly called on Beijing to publicly condemn Russia's actions, but so far China has not condemned Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

Russia launched its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine on February 24 and since October has been carrying out attacks on energy infrastructure, leaving millions of Ukrainians without electricity./ REL
