London investigates traces of uranium found in cargo at Heathrow Airport

Britain's police counter-terrorism unit is investigating after border officers discovered traces of uranium in a shipment at London's Heathrow Airport.

The Metropolitan Police announced on Wednesday that on December 29 they had found traces of a fairly small amount of uranium during the routine process of scanning a package destined for the United Kingdom. The counter-terrorism command is conducting investigations, while no arrests have yet been made.

According to reports from the BBC network, the uranium was in a load of scrap metal. The Sun newspaper, which first reported on the incident, said the shipment originated in Pakistan and arrived on a plane from Oman.

Richard Smith, head of the counter-terrorism command, said the amount of contaminated material was "extremely small and has been assessed by experts as not posing a threat to the public".

He said it "does not appear to be related to any direct threat" while investigations continue.

"We will investigate in every direction to find the origin and make sure it does not pose any further threats," he said. Prime Minister's spokesman Rishi Sunak refused to comment on the investigations./VOA
