China eases trade tensions with US/suspenses port fees for American ships

China announced on Monday that it is suspending port fees it had imposed on American ships calling at its ports, while also taking other steps to ease the trade war with the United States.

The two countries have been locked in a months-long trade war that has had a serious impact on the global economy. Following a meeting on October 30 between US President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping, the two countries agreed to withdraw some of the punitive measures they had imposed on each other.

China’s Ministry of Transport confirmed on Monday that it would suspend for one year port fees imposed per net ton of cargo on ships owned or operated by US companies, organizations or individuals when they call at Chinese ports.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce also suspended for one year sanctions it had imposed on five US subsidiaries of South Korean shipbuilding giant Hanwha Ocean.

Other previously announced measures also took effect on Sunday. China extended for a year the suspension of some of the additional tariffs it had imposed on American products, keeping them at 10%. The Asian giant also suspended additional tariffs imposed in March on soybeans and some other American agricultural products.

For its part, the United States reduced tariffs on many Chinese products from 20% to 10%. Today's measures are the latest announced by Beijing since the Trump-Xi meeting. On Sunday, China announced that it had lifted a ban on exports to the United States of gallium, antimony and germanium, rare metals essential to industry. /CNA
